Soroti medical associates nursing home was founded in 1983 as a small clinic by the family to address the challenges faced by the community in accessing quality healthcare package. Most of the development so far is sacrifices from the family. This was the time of great difficulties in Soroti, with wars, unrest and the health care delivery was equally difficult. This unit has since grown to remarkable size moving towards hospital status soon, God willing.
The unit is located in Teso region in the eastern part of Uganda, the region has an estimated population of 1.89million people (UBOS 2011) and it comprises of 8 districts namely: Soroti, serere, Katakwi, Kaberamaido, Kumi, Ngora, and Bukedea. The region covers a total area of 2,377 km2 of which 2,177 km2 is land while 177 km2 is forest.
Uganda being among the least developed countries, it therefore faces severe resource constraints, latest survey showed that 44% of our population lives below the poverty line, therefore this contributes to high morbidity and mortality rate. It’s because of this that the clinic has tried to subsidize the treatment rates and providing treatment on charity bases for our patients who are not able.
This has brought a strain on the clinic in that purchasing vital equipment that would help in specialized care (that can only be accessed from one regional referral hospital that is already stretched beyond capacity) has been made impossible.
So development of Soroti Medical Associates Nursing Home to a hospital level, to be able to offer specialized care will go a long way in improving the access to private specialized and eventually tertiary care in this region of Uganda.
We at the moment have part time and full time health personnel that are helping in running this facility headed by Dr Engulu William Martin
“To make secondary and tertiary health care accessible and affordable to a majority of the rural population and urban poor in north – east Uganda”
All Ugandans access affordable quality secondary Tertiary health care at all levels by the establishment of a multispecialty centre in Soroti
